{"id":13355,"date":"2018-10-24T07:52:05","date_gmt":"2018-10-24T05:52:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.centsys.co.za\/?p=13355"},"modified":"2018-10-24T07:52:05","modified_gmt":"2018-10-24T05:52:05","slug":"how-does-surge-protection-work","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.centsys.com\/fr\/how-does-surge-protection-work\/","title":{"rendered":"How Does Surge Protection Work?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The celebrated American writer <strong>Mark Twain<\/strong>, author of such classics as <em>The Adventures of Tom Sawyer<\/em>, once reflected on the awesome powers of nature by saying that \u201cthunder is good, thunder is impressive; but it is lightning that does the work\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"giphy-embed\" src=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/embed\/3oEjHB1EKuujDjYFWw\" width=\"330\" height=\"480\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/gifs\/art-thunderstorm-davestrick-3oEjHB1EKuujDjYFWw\">via GIPHY<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, this \u201cwork\u201d often involves obliterating electronic equipment with the kind of nonchalance that is to be expected from a force carrying several million volts of electricity. In the majority of cases, whatever hapless piece of equipment draws the ire of a particularly bad-tempered cumulonimbus cloud, is criminally outmatched.<\/p>\n<p>While there is no way to <em>prevent <\/em>lightning from striking one\u2019s electronics \u2013 nature being unpredictable and all \u2013 surge protection devices do reduce the likelihood of said electronics being reduced to a heap of smouldering ash.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But how exactly do surge protectors do this?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Well, when there is a lightning strike or electrical surge, there is a sudden \u2013 and dramatic \u2013 increase in voltage (this is sometimes known as \u201ctransient voltage\u201d), which most domestic appliances just aren\u2019t equipped to deal with.<\/p>\n<p>Most modern surge protectors make use of a component known as a <strong>metal oxide varistor<\/strong>, or MOV, which is a kind of diode with an internal resistance that varies depending on the applied voltage. If the applied voltage exceeds a certain level, the MOV decreases its resistance to divert the excess current to ground and away from the connected electronics.<\/p>\n<p>A <strong>transient-voltage-suppression diode<\/strong>, or transorb, is another commonly-used component in surge protection circuitry but, unlike MOVs, a transorb doesn\u2019t divert current to ground, but rather \u201cclamps\u201d or \u201cshunts\u201d overvoltages above the component\u2019s specified breakdown voltage.<\/p>\n<p>Some surge protectors, like our brand new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.centsys.co.za\/surge-protector-for-gate-motors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">plug \u2018n play device specifically designed for gate motors<\/a>, also include what is known as a line filter, a type of circuit that works like a sieve and \u201cfilters out\u201d the electrical noise (\u201cmains hum\u201d) sometimes caused by alternating current.
