Simply measuring a battery\u2019s voltage under static conditions is generally not sufficient to determine whether the battery is truly flat.\u00a0 <\/span>It is more effective<\/strong>, and considerably more accurate<\/strong>, to measure the voltage while the battery is under load<\/strong>, the load in this case being a gate<\/strong>, garage door<\/strong> or boom pole<\/strong>.\u00a0 <\/span>This short guide will assist the user in accurately diagnosing a flat gate motor battery.<\/span><\/p>\n

Required tools<\/span><\/u><\/b><\/div>\n
\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>AVO meter or volt meter<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>Terminal screwdriver<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>It is useful to have an extra pair of hands standing by to assist with the testing<\/span><\/div>\n
Procedure<\/span><\/u><\/b><\/div>\n
\n

\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>Disconnect the two motor wires<\/strong> from the controller (PC board).\u00a0 <\/span>The motor wires are generally rather thick<\/strong> and black and blue in colour<\/strong>, though they can be any colour.\u00a0 <\/span>The terminals on the controller where the motor wires are connected will be marked \u2018MOTOR<\/strong>\u2019 or \u2018MTR<\/strong>\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>Switch off the mains supply or unplug the charger from the controller<\/strong>.\u00a0 <\/span>In CENTURION<\/a> gate motors, the charger is normally situated directly opposite the battery and may be black or greyish-green in colour<\/strong>.\u00a0 <\/span>The reason for eliminating the \u201ccharging voltage\u201d is so that the voltage you read from the battery is not biased<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>Engage your gate motor<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>Now connect the motor wires straight onto the battery terminals<\/strong>.\u00a0 <\/span>It doesn’t really matter which colour wire you connect to which battery terminal, as the polarity of the motor wires simply determine the motor direction.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>Unless the battery is completely depleted, the gate should start to move<\/strong> the instant you connect touch the motor wires to the terminals.\u00a0 <\/span>Don\u2019t be startled \u2013 this is what it\u2019s meant to do!<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>This is where the extra pair of hands comes in.\u00a0 <\/span>Ask your assistant to measure the voltage across the battery terminals while the gate is moving<\/strong>, i.e. while you are holding the motor wires to the terminals<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>The battery voltage should at no stage drop below 11V DC under load<\/strong>.\u00a0 <\/span>If it does, it is safe to say that your battery needs replacement<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>A rule of thumb when dealing with a faulty battery is to also check the charging voltage<\/strong>.\u00a0 <\/span>To do this, reconnect the charger or switch the mains back on, but now disconnect the battery (thick black and red) wires from the controller.\u00a0 <\/span>Measure across the two terminals on the controller where the battery would normally be connected.\u00a0 <\/span>For a 12V motor<\/strong>, this voltage should be approximately 14V DC<\/strong>, and approximately 27V DC<\/strong> for a 24V motor<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n
