Putting the pieces back together – The Johannesburg Children’s Home provides a safe refuge for 64 children of who have been found in need of care by the Children’s Court.

Aged from 3 to 18 years, all the children have suffered physical, sexual or emotional abuse, severe neglect or abandonment. Some are AIDS orphans and/or are HIV positive.

Formerly known as the African Children’s Feeding Scheme, the ACFS has come a long way since the late Bishop Trevor Huddleston started the original peanut butter sandwich at schools in 1945.

Today, ACFS pursue seven separate but inter-related activities aimed at uplifting and empowering communities in Soweto, Kagiso, Alexandra, Thembisa, Daveyton, Kwa Thema and Tsakane.

ACFS provide 21 000 children with milk and a peanut butter sandwich daily and, whilst this remains their core focus, they also work to promote healthy, contributing citizens who are economically viable and self sufficient, through:

community food gardens
health and nutrition education
HIV/AIDS awareness

Margaret Mokoka, opened the Lerato Love Home at number 2 Lupin Street, Marlboro Gardens, Johannesburg.

Margaret grew up during the apartheid era, and because education was not available, she never learned to read or write. She makes sure the children she helps have a different future. The nursery school she founded provides care for 72 children and her feeding program feeds 600 children each day. She is the pastor of her church and a mother figure to the 92 children who live at Lerato Love Home.

The mission statement of the Vulture Programme is to advance knowledge, awareness and innovation in the conservation of African vulture populations, with emphasis placed on the Cape Vultures in Magaliesberg.

The project recently faced uncertain times and its future in a precarious position when it was forced off its premises. The programme was, however, able to purchase a property along the Magaliesberg mountains and close to the tourist hub of Hartbeespoort Dam with the help of donors. Volunteers, donors, friends and family members have been working around the clock to re-build, re-erect and move the facilities, which comprise a large vulture flight enclosure, two rehabilitation and six hospital enclosures together with the vultures, bataleurs, brown snake-eagles, jackal-buzzard and a yellow-billed kite resident in the previous rescue and rehabilitation facilities.

Work is now under way to establish the necessary security measures with the help of Gallagher, Centurion Systems and Cactus Security and plans are afoot to open our doors to the public and to re-establish the all-important research and educational aspects of the programme as soon as possible.

CENTURION has partnered with the Douglasdale Community Police Forum, and together with various other suppliers, we have assisted them to upgrade the Douglasdale Police Station.

The upgrade programme will ensure that a more community-friendly service is possible, and that the police station can now offer a new, secure client parking area and a new Client Service Centre that is designed to be far more appropriate to cater for the various services offered to the community.

Behind the scenes, the police station is now more secure and has an improved infrastructure in the way of an expaded fleet of vehicles and offices to providebetter and quicker service delivery to the community it serves.

CENTURION is constantly looking for ways to improve our efficiencies, reduce waste, and improve our productivity.

We try to reduce our paper consumption through creating a culture of ‘print only what you really have to’ and then also try to reuse paper where possible. In addition, where paper cannot be reused, we have begun a recycling program further try and reduce our impact on our environment.

Our new factory was built with efficiency in mind. Even our floors and ceiling slabs are insulated to reduce the amount of heating required in winter and cooling required in summer, helping to reduce electricity consumption. In addition to this we have a culture of ensuring that all lights that are not immediately required are turned off, and passages have motion sensing light switches, providing lights only when required.

Every two months CENTURION runs their own internal Blood Drive, where we get together and donate to the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) on location at our head office.
In the time of need, CENTURIONs can be relied upon to pull together in their personal capacities and to support various charities, by donating money, toys, books etc. Our most recent drive was to collect and supply clothing, toys and books to a volunteer-funded crèche servicing the children of the South African Police Service residing in the police barracks in Norwood, Johannesburg.
